Yuri
Full name (reasons why your parents gave you this name): Yuri Zane Ruley. Yuri was the name of my father’s best friend while he was growing up. My mother thought of Zane, she said she liked it because it broke up the Y's and R's.
What different ethnicities are you? Where is your last name from?: German, Polish, Czech, Norwegian, Swedish, French, and some Native American way back on my grandmother side. I think my last name is German.
Birthdate (any interesting details of your birth): June 3rd 1976. I almost didn't make it. When they pulled me out my right leg was up around my neck. The trauma wasn't good on the old ticker. I had to spend a couple of weeks in an incubator.
Birthplace: Matagan Army Hospital, Ft. Lewis, Wa.
Residence today, short description of that city, memories of it, jobs, crazy happenings: Bremerton, Washington. Good views of the water and mountains. A bit of a slumping economy, but we have a new mayor who promises to turn it around. My father used to live a couple of blocks from where I live now, and I remember it being a little rough. Once I called 911 because I thought someone was trying to break in. Turns out he was just taking a leak in the backyard. Spiros Pizza and Pasta. My only schlep job thank God. I enjoyed it though. Hey and the boss even looked past me spilling hot coffee on him. I remember in high school my friends and I would skate all the time. We'd go downtown and get mall security to chase us. We were brats.
Family; siblings; parents jobs: Jack Leroy Ruley Jr. . Wyn Esterberg. Brothers-Eric, Brian, Jason, Neal. Sisters- Jessica and Caitlin. My father is an air traffic controller. My mother is a nurse.
As a child, memories of being a kid, pets, what did you used to get in trouble for, what did you like to do etc? I used to move alot when I was growing up. my fathers job had him all over the place. The years of my childhood I remember the most were 8 to 11. I'm not sure why. We lived in the woods, and my friends and I would spend every spare second in those woods climbing trees and making forts. We also had a German shepard named Heidi. We were inseparable for those years. The thing that got me in trouble the most is between my ears, or the lack there of. Nothing big just typical kid stuff. Being stupid.
What did you wanna be when your grew up?: An architect, oceanographer and then I wanted to play drums for a living.
Any traditions in your family, quirky things?: A lot of sailing. camping trips in the mountains and to the ocean.
What were you like in high school: I guess the same except for how I dressed. I really had no clue. Pink pants, yellow shirt, leather vest. Big poofy hair.
Favorite subject in H.S: Music and History
Worst subject in HS: Math and English
Most memorable moments in high school? (first kiss, prom, sports, etc) (good and bad): One time in marine biology I was spacing out, the teacher caught on and asked me to come up to the front of the class and illustrate his point on the blackboard. I had no idea what he was talking about so I just drew this big line across the whole board really slowly. He told me to sit down and pay attention. On another day in that same class one of the students found a frozen cat in the teachers office. While the teacher was out for a minute the student started running around the class and acting like the cat was flying around. I thought it was hilarious.
Band that started your love for music: The Cure.
First song tried to play on your instrument: I hate everything about you by ugly kid Joe. My first band did it at our 9th grade talent show.
How did you meet the other 2 guys in your band?: I met mike and Andy at church. I had known tom from school before I met mike and Andy. Tom actually told me to stop banging on buckets and get a real drumset.
How did you become a member of MxPx?: When I met them, Mike and Andy had been playing together for a couple of months without a drummer. They asked me if I was interested in jamming with them. We played together on a Sunday afternoon. Mike taught me 10 or so songs, I liked it, and the rest is history.
How was your first practice together and first show? where were they?: The first practice went well. Mike taught me how to play the "punk beat". Our first show was in Mikes backyard. We put together a BBQ. We played the same set twice because we sucked so bad the first time around.
What was your first impression of the other 2 members in MxPx the first day? I thought they were...nice. Andy was quiet and Mike got down to the business of showing me the songs.
Wedding Day: where: how was it, details (like mechanical bulls) weird happenings?: The first time was in Montreal. It was awesome. When I saw Katie walking down the aisle I almost pasted out. I'm not sure why. Maybe the reality of the moment hit me. The second one was in my mothers backyard overlooking the bay. That one was nice, real chill. We had been married a week so there was none of the exciting feelings from the first time. But it was still really nice. Mike played a song for us.
Where did you meet your wife: We met while she was vacationing in L.A.
What are you and your wife up to now? (decorating, pets)?: Trying to make our yard look halfway decent. Yeah we got a dog. He's a Pug and his name is Confucius. He's cool. He's chilling out in his old age(he's 10 months old). He used to be a lot more high maintenance.
Hobbies?( fishing, bowling, shopping, camping, sports, master of board games anything besides music): I like to go camping. I love road trips. I like to sail. I like to go for walks when it's nice. I used to skydive but I had to give that up. I like to strum the guitar every now and then. oh sorry no musical stuff. snowboarding. I used to have fun riding my motorcycle, but I sold it for some reason.
Favorite food: dish, dessert: I love Thai food, Mexican, Jamaican, Chinese, Italian and Arby's.
Favorite thing to do while at home, started anything new that you’ve never really done before, a new talent: I'm making a bed for Katie and I. That has been quite the project. I've had a lot of fun doing that. My Grandfather so graciously donated his shop and his time to help me. I can see making more furniture in the future.
Was there something you were pursuing before MxPx came along? Yeah, passing the 9th grade.
What would you be doing or pursuing if you weren’t in Mxpx? Hold on a sec, let me check my crystal ball. It's so hard to say. I was 15 when the band started so I wasn't thinking to far into the future. I mean I wondered what I might want to do in the future. I thought it would be cool to be an oceanographer or an architect. I thought the army might be for me.
Craziest thing ever done: I've jumped out of an airplane more than once, on purpose.
Any obsessive qualities?: I'm a handwasher. I wouldn't say I was obsessive but I'm borderline.
What would your band members say is your most prominent characteristic?: Either Forgetfulness or sense of humour.
Your most memorable moment in life?: Meeting my wife will always stand out as the most odd twist of fate.
