Mike
Full name (reasons why your parents gave you this name): Michael Arthur Herrera, I was named after a friend of my parents and my middle name is my dad’s first name (not his original though)
What different ethnicities are you? Where is your last name from?: I’m half Mexican and half English/Welsh. My dads side is Mexican..That’s where I got my last name of course- it means blacksmith I think, or maybe it’s as common as Smith, can’t remember.
Birthdate (any interesting details of your birth): Nov.6,1976, I almost died cause my umbilical cord was choking me. I wasn’t breathing so the doc freaked and bruised my little head…I had a big bump on it when I was little.
Birthplace:Bremerton, WA-at the US Naval Hospital. I was a Navy brat.
Residence today, short description of that city, memories of it, jobs, crazy happenings: Bremerton, WA-I live on the other side of town from where I grew up. Actually we used to live in a duplex for a couple years not far from where I live now. Bremerton needs a lot of love, it’s a poor town where no one can get ahead. Not a place to start a promising career, you either work long hard hours at the shipyard or you work retail, food service or become a doctor, lawyer, dentist or accountant.
Not the life for me…. I got my first real job at 14. I didn’t like the hard labor and moved to working in restaurants, that wasn’t fun either. I’m really good at washing dishes now though.
Family; siblings; parents jobs: My parents are still married, Dad works at the shipyard and he’s a great Dad. He’s worked really hard for our family. I couldn’t ask for a better father. My mom works for the band, she pays the bills, designs artwork, does a million other things. She works harder then we do, she’s great. Ive got 2 sisters, the 1st one is married and long gone, the 2nd is living and working in Bremerton.
As a child, memories of being a kid, pets, what did you used to get in trouble for, what did you like to do etc? We always had cats around the house and still do. We had a family dog named Augie the Doggie. He was half weiner and half Chihuahua. I used to spy on all the neighbors (not peeping). Just sneaking around the neighborhood trying not to be seen, it was a fun game. I had as big of an imagination as any kid. I played army, liked GI Joe’s, rode my bike around and played a lot of backyard football.
What did you wanna be when your grew up?: Anything glamorous, a football player, basketball player, major league pitcher, and yes rock singer-remember I was like 9 years old.
Any traditions in your family, quirky things?: We have crepes for Christmas breakfast, that’s about it.
High School: Graduated 1995, Central Kitsap High School.Yay.
What were you like in high school: Introverted, just hung with a couple people, went skateboarding.
Favorite subject in H.S: Independent music/ Independent video media. I didn’t have to show up to these classes most of the time. Or I could wander the halls to get "footage". ha suckers.
Worst subject in HS: Math…only took geometry my sophomore year…that was enough for me.
Most memorable moments in high school? Finally getting out of there. Ditching school and actually having somewhere to go.
Band that started your love for music: Stray Cats..I didn’t know it was Rockabilly, all I knew was it rocked.
First song tried to play on your instrument: First song, learned was the 3 note hook to "Bad to the Bone".
How did you meet the other 2 guys in your band?: I met Yuri through a friend at a local youth group. Met Tom through Yuri at school.
How did you become a member of MxPx?: Started the band.
How was your first practice together and first show? where were they?: We thought it sounded great the first practice we had. The 1st show was the opposite-a total train wreck. We were strangling alley cats into microphones. It was the worst…I lost my voice..I had never sang that much in my life. The 1st practice was in Yuri’s basement. The 1st show was in my backyard.
What was your first impression of the other 2 members in MxPx the first day? Yuri seemed really into the music/skate scene. He was eager to just play and have fun.
Tom had already been in bands playing drums so he knew what he was doing. But by the time Tom joined the band in ‘95, Yuri knew what he was doing as well.
Wedding Day: where: how was it, details (like mechanical bulls) weird happenings?: We had our reception at a big barn, with dancing and a mechanical bull…the bull was so fun. Everyone crowded around and watched people getting thrown around the room.
Where did you meet your wife: The 1st time I met my wife Holli was in Dallas, TX.
What are you and your wife up to now? (decorating, pets)?: We got a cat and a dog. We’ve made our house livable and we’ve still got a lot of work to do.
I learned a ton about carpentry, electricity and dry walling, etc. from remodeling/finishing our basement.
Hobbies?( fishing, bowling, shopping, camping, sports, master of board games anything besides music): I love skateboarding, snowboarding, laying on the beach. Driving around town on sunny days, playing guitar, recording and writing songs, golfing. Playing video games, oh and making short video documentaries.
Favorite food: dish, dessert: Thai food..Mexican food.
Favorite thing to do while at home, started anything new that you’ve never really done before, a new talent: I like mowing the lawn, cause it looks so much better when I’m done. Walking the dog is great.
Was there something you were pursuing before MxPx came along? Just the realization that we’re all gonna die. Why not medicate with music? Is that so wrong?
What would you be doing or pursuing if you weren’t in Mxpx? Washing dish number 1,329,822..pursuing dish # 2 million.
Craziest thing ever done: Invented a car wash that attaches to your garage door so when you leave your car is always clean.
Any obsessive qualities?: Workaholic.
What would your band members say is your most prominent characteristic?: Being bossy?
Your most memorable moment in life?: The last couple months.
I’m in love with today. I am truly happy with my life right here, right now. (I’m not anxious)
